Our current project is working on our garden. It has been so time consuming and lots of energy is needed. Even so, I am so excited to be working on this. I was bummed last summer that we did not have a garden, but there was just no way we could swing it with us just having moved in and me being 7 months pregnant.
Below are some pictures in the different stages:
This one is the only "before" picture I can find right now. If you look in the far left corner you can see a big hill full of cannas. Luckily for us, some friends wanted some cannas for their home, so they dug them all up for us; we just had to get rid of the ones they did not want. This saved us lots of time and energy.
Here is a picture after we had tilled a LOT of dirt. Note the piles of loose dirt back in the corner and along the fence where Skylar is sitting. There is still so much more to till to make it level. We basically have to break up all the old hills and turn them into raised bed planting boxes.
This is where the first box will go. After some experimentation, we are only tilling enough to make room for one box at a time so we don't have to move the dirt as much. This way, once we put the box in we can just throw the dirt right in it. Anything to save time and energy!
Here is the first box we made, the "prototype" as Guy calls it. So this is what the boxes are all going to look like. They are octagonal, and four of the sides will have benches on them. We wanted to go with something more circular than the usual rectangle in order to retain an organic feel to the garden as much as possible. Eventually there will be at least 5 of these in the garden scattered around in a carefully chosen random(?) layout. Right now we have enough materials to make 2. They are made out of Trex so they should last forever. Guy has been working super hard to design and build them. The next step is to carry it over and place/pound it down in to the dirt and attach the benches. Then he only has four more to do; no small thing because this one took 2 weekends! That's OK, now that all the kinks in the process are worked out, they'll go much faster. :-)

Awesome job you three!! Isn't it great that Skylar wants to get in on the action? Love the garden box design. Did you get the Trex at Home Depot? I'm marking my boxes out tomorrow and purchasing materials tomorrow night. Can't wait to see your done pictures.
We got the trex at Lowes but I am sure home depot will have it. its not cheap though (but will last forever)
those boxes are interesting. we are super excited about our garden this year. scotts putting in new designs and michaela is starting to water plants so we will have her do that with the garden. i love that the kids want to help.
